Bay City, MI – A grand jury today indicted a sex offender convicted of murdering a woman and shooting her child on the Isabella Reservation in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, United States Attorney Don N. Ison announced.

Jonathan Ashford, 37, of Mount Pleasant, has been charged with murder for allegedly shooting and killing an Indian victim on the Isabella Reservation. Ashford is not a Native American. The indictment also charges Ashford with assault with intent to commit murder for shooting the victim’s child. Additionally, Ashford is charged with failure to register as a sex offender, possession of a firearm in furtherance of violence, two counts of first-degree child abuse after conviction of a felony and domestic violence by a habitual offender. If convicted, Ashford could face up to life in prison.

“Our office is prepared to fully investigate and prosecute cases of domestic violence,” said U.S. Attorney Ison. “Victims of domestic and gender-based violence deserve justice and our protection.”

An indictment is only an accusation, not proof of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police, Mount Pleasant Police Department, Isabella County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, Saginaw City Police, Buena Vista Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Bureau of Investigation. Alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Roy Kranz is prosecuting the case.
