HONOLULU (Hawaii NewsNow) – A drive-by shooting leaves a Kapolei man with a welt and a message for the public.

Shawn Tiwanak said he was walking his dogs along Kapolei Parkway when he suddenly felt something hit his neck.

“A car was driving and I heard a noise and suddenly something hit me on the side of my neck below my ear and it was a severe pain,” Tiwanak said.

He said the sharp pain comes from a gun that shoots hydrogel bullets known as water balls.

Tiwanak, who underwent a heart transplant two years ago, said he tried to chase the car, but it was too late.

“I’m still a little shaken, like I can’t believe it all happened,” Tiwanak said.

Kapolei residents turned to social media in hopes of finding the shooter, and within an hour heard from someone who identified the shooter as his son.

Both of them went to Tiwanak’s house to apologize in person.

“At the end of the day a 15-year-old boy was a passenger in the car and ended up just for kicks, citing that it would be fun to shoot at somebody,” Tiwanak said. “I ended up not charging a young man because he and his father had the courage to stand up to me and come out and do the right thing and make it right.”

HPD’s retired Deputy Chief John McCarthy said the boy could face a serious felony charge.

“At the very least, it would be assault with a weapon in the second degree,” McCarthy said. “You’re talking five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.”

Tiwana knows she can force the boy to face the consequences.

By speaking out, he hopes others will learn from the teenager’s recklessness.

“To the community you know, to the kids, it’s really not worth putting your life on hold or putting your life in danger because you’re doing something you think is a joke,” Tiwanak said.
