The BJP has set a target of winning 12 of the 14 seats in Assam in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.
Addressing a meeting of party workers here, Sarma said that the BJP will start working now to make Narendra Modi the prime minister of India for the third time in a row.
“Assam has 14 Lok Sabha seats and we won nine last time. This time, we have to win at least 12 seats,” said BJP president JP Nadda and home minister Amit Shah.
“We will not stop till the Lok Sabha elections. We want to see Narendra Modi as the prime minister for the third time,” he added.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, three seats were won by the Congress, one by the AIUDF and one by an independent.
Referring to the recent ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI), he said the government has resolved to permanently wipe out fundamentalist groups from the soil of Assam.
He announced that an “ambitious plan” worth Rs 5,000 crore will be rolled out next year to create self-employment opportunities for two youths in the state.
“We have given 38,983 young people out of one million jobs promised by the government. We will complete the goal in the next six months,” he said.
Sarma told BJP workers that an additional 7,000 families in each district will be included in its flagship program ‘Orunodoi’, under which the state government provides monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000, which will be raised to Rs 1,250 from this month.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Transport, Ports and Water Sarbananda Sonowal said that peace has returned to Assam after the BJP took power at the Center as well as in the state.
“Years of Congress misrule have darkened Assam and the Northeast was the most backward state in India. Assam and the Northeast have developed because of the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.
