Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday informed that the rhino that was hit by a car in Kaziranga has survived. Sarma said that the vehicle was seized and fined, and the government is working to make a 32-km long special road.
“Rhino are our special friends; We will not allow any violation of their position,” the Assam CM said in a tweet.
In this unfortunate incident in Haldibari, the rhinoceros survived; impounded car & fined. Meanwhile, we are working on a 32-km special road to save the animals in Kaziranga,” he added, posting a video of the incident.
In the video, the truck can be seen trying to avoid hitting the rhino by changing lanes at the last minute but failing to do so. The rhinoceros, after being hit by a car, stood on his feet trying to get off the road, but fell again. Visibly injured, the rhino, on the second attempt, left the road.
According to local media reports, the vehicle had started from Jorhat in Guwahati and the accident took place on Haldibari Animal Road. The car was said to have been caught in Bagari area of Nagacuun district, and it was said that the transport and forest department has been fined.
Last month, Sarma and spiritual leader Jagadish Vasudev, known as Sadhguru, were photographed allegedly taking a jeep safari inside the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) after sunset. The rangers claim that the safari violates the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and may endanger the animals in the park.
The number of one-horned rhinos living in the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) in Assam has increased by 200 in the last four years, according to the latest census released in March this year. With a population of 2613, KNPTR has the largest population of one-horned rhinos.
