Niagara Falls, NY – Another Indian tribe of Upstate New York is increasing its move to the illegal drug industry.
The Seneca Nation of Indians announced plans today to open its first state-run drug store, or dispensary, just a few blocks from its casino and other downtown properties. of Niagara Falls. That store, which is expected to open in early 2023, will include a marijuana plant that will be located in Seneca County on the South Side.
Together, they created a national entity called Nativa Cannabis that offers vertical integration (seeds for sale) to the cannabis industry. It was announced that Rickey Armstrong, Sr., was sworn in today as the nation’s new president.
The 2,500 square foot marijuana dispensary is located at the corner of John Daly Boulevard and Niagara Street, next to the Seneca One Stop gas station and convenience store. It offers a wide range of drug products to those 21 and older, and includes a hidden window. Construction is already underway.
The Senecas did not reveal a specific location for the 90,000-square-foot garden, but they said it could be “expanded to meet future sales demands.”
More than 20 marijuana shops have been operating for the past year or so in various locations in Seneca County in western New York, but they are independent and not national, said the national speaker Phil Pantano.
The Senecas’ official access to legal marijuana puts them among tribes such as the Mohawks, Cayugas and Oneidas, who have launched marijuana operations or are planning to open soon.
All of India’s efforts are moving forward as the government continues to issue its marijuana licenses following the April 2021 legalization of the recreational drug for adults. The state has issued licenses for the cultivation and processing of marijuana, but has not yet issued licenses for retail stores.
The first state retail licenses will be issued later this year, with priority given to applicants who have previously been convicted of a decriminalized marijuana offense.
Here is the current state of Indian tribal marijuana businesses in Upstate New York:
· There are now a dozen licensed dispensaries in the Akwesasne Mohawk area near Hogansburg, a tribal spokeswoman said. The Mohawks began issuing store licenses after some unauthorized businesses opened before 2021. The new store, which opened last week, is owned by a member of the Mohawk tribe and a small investment from actor and comedian Jim Belushi.
· The Cayuga Nation has recreational medicine at its Lakeside trading post in Union Springs in Cayuga County and another south of Seneca Falls in Seneca County. It also operates a plant/processing plant in Seneca County.
· In September, the Oneida Indian Nation announced plans to launch a marijuana “seed for sale” business that is expected to open retail stores by 2023. The Oneidas plan to grow and processing marijuana in a new 50,000-square-foot facility to be constructed. on Hill Road in Verona and will sell to stores on its properties in Oneida and Madison counties next year.
