Planned strikes by Royal Mail workers over the next two weeks have been called off after being challenged by the company.

Members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) are in a long-running dispute over pay and conditions. Several strikes have taken place in recent weeks, and more are planned for November 2, 3, 4, 8, 9 and 10.

The union said, following a letter from Royal Mail’s legal team, it had decided to withdraw industrial action notices for the next two weeks. It was also announced that the strikes would resume on Saturday, November 12.

Its General Secretary, Dave Ward, said: “We understand how many members are deeply disappointed by this decision…

The CWU’s deputy general secretary, Andy Furey, said: “We are very aware of the anger of many about the decision but we believe it is the right thing to do to protect our dispute.

“Our members are at risk from the highest levels of Royal Mail as they protect their businesses and the communities they serve.

“They are not going to give up easily and we will be reminding the company of their decision at Acas in the coming days.”

Royal Mail said in a statement: “The CWU has called off strike action after Royal Mail wrote to the CWU to express a number of concerns and to formally notify them of the planned strike action.

“Royal Mail and CWU have scheduled talks at Acas on Monday 31 October. We will continue to do everything we can to protect businesses, companies and the country.
