MANILA, Philippines – A police officer and a suspect were killed in an indiscriminate shooting in a Quezon City subdivision, while another police officer was wounded in Caloocan City.
In a statement on Monday, the Quezon City Police District identified the slain police officer as Cpl. Noel Ogano and wounded Lt. Col. Jerry Castillo, QCPD-SWAT, as well as slain suspect Martin Marlot Nunez, 42, a Philippine Merchant Marine Academy cadet.
According to investigations, Nunes was under the influence of alcohol when he fired a handgun on Sunday morning (November 13) at Bougainville St., Maligaya Park Subdivision, Brgy. Pasong Putik Proper, Quezon City, instills fear and dread among residents.
An eyewitness to the incident sought the assistance of the Pasong Putik Police Station, who then called for reinforcements from the QCPD-SWAT.
As a result, a pursuit ensued, leading the QCPD to coordinate with the Caloocan City Police Station as the suspect fled the area.
Finally, the joint police force located Nunes at Palmera Homes in Maligaya Parkland, Nova East. 177, Caloocan City. There, they asked him to surrender, but during the discussion, the suspect suddenly opened fire on the police officers, leading to a shootout that killed Ogano and Nunes and injured Castillo.
The QCPD said it mourned Ogano’s death and praised him for his “bravery and ultimate sacrifice in the performance of his duty as a public servant.”
