Police search for suspects in shooting incidents in Tainan | Media Pyro

Tainan, Nov. 10 (CNA) Police said they are looking for a suspect who opened fire on a Tainan city councilor’s office and a private business establishment in the city’s Xujia District early Thursday.

Xujia police said they received a report of fireworks on Songshen Road at 3 a.m., but responding officers found the steel roller-door of Independent City Councilor Hsieh Tsai-wang’s (謝財旺) office riddled with about 30 firecrackers.

Empty shells used in the firing were also found scattered on the floor at the scene, the precinct added.

The surveillance footage shows that the suspect arrived on a scooter, stopped in front of the office, fired several times with a submachine gun and reached the scooter.

Police later discovered that the same man had opened fire at a technology firm shortly before arriving at Hsieh’s office, Tainan City Police Department Commissioner Fang Yeng-ning (方仰寧) told reporters.

Investigators found 58 bullet casings at the scene, and Fang said there were no injuries in the two incidents in Xujia.

According to Hsieh Lung-chieh (謝龍介), a Tainan city councilor of the main opposition Kuomintang, the technology firm that shot down is Kuo Tsai-chin (郭再欽), an executive committee member of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). .

Police are trying to identify the gunman and find out the motive for the crime, the commissioner said.

Hsieh Tsai-Wang is an independent councilor who will not seek re-election in this month’s nine-in-one elections. However, he supports his DPP candidate daughter, Hsieh Shu-fan (謝舒凡), who now uses his office as her campaign office.

The councilor said the shooting was politically motivated as some netizens had recently attacked her and her daughter’s political views online.

Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) said the shooting was being investigated by local prosecutors, stressing that maintaining social order and fighting crime are the priorities of the city’s police.
