Police have identified a 35-year-old woman as the victim in the shooting death of a man at a Northeast Portland apartment last week.

Sharleen Beaver was shot to death Wednesday night around 8:30 p.m. Neighbors said they called 911 after hearing seven silent but loud gunshots from inside an apartment where she had lived for about six months.

Police officers arrived at the complex in the 4600 block of Northeast Lombard Street and found Beaver dead at the scene. An adult male was taken to hospital with “serious injuries”. Police have not identified him or released information on his condition.

According to neighbors, the man went by the name “Major” and was Beaver’s boyfriend. A neighbor said he was taken out on a stretcher with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Carmen Rodriguez, a woman who has lived in an adjacent complex for four years, said some residents gathered outside that night for a small vigil and prayer while detectives investigated. Neighbors said Beaver was the mother of a teenage son.

The morning after the shooting, red tape crossed a wooden staircase leading to Beaver’s unit, where a small trace of blood was spattered on the front door. A Bible sat inside a window sill, and the lights were still burning behind the curtains of the apartment.

Beaver is Portland’s 86th homicide victim so far this year, most of them by gunfire. The toll is on pace to surpass the city’s record 92 homicides in 2021.
