One person dead after officer-involved shooting in Santa Maria | Media Pyro

Santa Maria police said one person was killed in an officer-involved shooting.

Police say officers made contact with the man on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 10:20 p.m. during an investigation in the 1000 block of W. Morrison Ave. They say he threatened officers with a weapon. Officers reportedly fired non-lethal projectiles at him, but he refused to comply with their commands.

The man then ran into a nearby apartment complex and hid behind a barricade, police said. The police said that they tried to negotiate with him for two hours but he refused to surrender.

The residents then tried to break into the apartment, police said. That’s when an officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was reportedly killed.

Police have not disclosed what type of weapon he was carrying.

His name has not been released yet. Police say he was on probation for resisting officers with threats or force and had a warrant out for his arrest for violating probation.

According to the Santa Maria Police Department, the department will conduct an internal investigation to ensure police [sic] The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office will also be investigating the shooting.
