In the latest in a series of mass shootings in the United States on June 9, a 23-year-old shooter opened fire on his co-workers at a manufacturing facility in northern Maryland, killing at least three people and seriously injuring a fourth. Police following the shooting.

Washington County Sheriff Douglas Mullendore said at a press conference that the assailant was wounded in a shootout with a Maryland state trooper as he tried to escape in his car. Both the suspect and the trooper were taken to a local hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. Mullendore declined to comment on the circumstances or possibilities of the attack, but said the gunman and all of his victims worked at Columbia Machine in Smithsburg, Maryland, near the Pennsylvania border. Mullendore said the shooter used a semi-automatic pistol handgun.

A Columbia Machine spokeswoman said the business was assisting authorities with an investigation into the shooting, but declined to elaborate. According to its website, the company supplies concrete production equipment to customers in more than 100 countries.

The FBI and the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also said they would send agents to the scene.

On June 2, a man armed with a rifle and a handgun opened fire inside a medical building in Tulsa, killing four people. Speaking to the media outside the St. Francis Hospital campus, Tulsa’s Deputy Police Chief Jonathan Brooks said the gunman died of a self-inflicted wound.

The June 2 mass shooting in the US came eight days after an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uwald, Texas, killing 19 children and two teachers in a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A white man is accused of killing ten black people in a racist attack at a Buffalo supermarket. The recent Memorial Day weekend saw multiple mass shootings across the country, with a single fatality resulting in the highest number of gun deaths.

In January 2013, then-US President Barack Obama signed legislation that defined a “mass murder” as the killing of three or more people in a single incident.
