One person was killed in a deputy-involved shooting near the Port of Catoosa Wednesday morning, authorities in Rogers County said.

According to authorities, it began after deputies received a call about an employee who had barricaded himself inside a Valmont utility building near the intersection of Oklahoma 266 and Alliance Drive in Catoosa. Deputies said officers made threats against law enforcement when they arrived on the scene around 4 a.m. Deputies say gas was deposited inside the building two hours later, but the suspect began shooting at deputies with a nail gun. The deputies returned fire and killed the suspect.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the shooting at the request of the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. Deputies say a sheriff was hit by a projectile, but it’s unclear if it was from nail gun shrapnel or a nail fired from a gun.

Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton said deputies tried to make the negotiations as peaceful as possible, but now that the investigation with the OSBI is underway, they are left with many questions.

“Why did he come here, why so many things, his motives, why did he block himself in one area of the business, so many questions,” Walton said.

Officials said the victim has not yet been identified. The OSBI confirmed that the investigation involved Native Americans and that McGirt was under the Supreme Court decision.
