New York City subway shooting suspect Frank James wants trial moved to Chicago | Media Pyro

Chicago (CBS) — The man accused of last spring’s New York City subway shooting that injured 10 people wants to move his trial to Chicago.

Attorneys for Frank James said their client would not get a fair trial in New York City — which is “demographically similar” to Chicago.

Lawyers argue that nonstop media coverage of the crime, along with news conferences by New York City Mayor Adams saying, “We got him,” made it impossible to find impartial jurors.

On April 12, James attacked straphangers in the tunnel between the 59th and 36th Street N train stations in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, shooting 10 people and injuring 13 others.

When the train stopped in the tunnel, a man wearing a gas mask set off smoke bombs and fired 33 shots, police say.

Police said James left with a bag, two gas canisters and an automatic handgun, which may have saved lives. James was arrested the day after the shooting at St. Mark’s Place and First Avenue in the East Village section of Manhattan, after police received a Crime Stoppers tip.

James previously lived in Milwaukee and moved to Philadelphia shortly before the shooting. A man named Frank James stayed at Chicago’s Aragon Arms Hotel — 4917 N. Kenmore Ave. in Uptown — from April 2015 to March 2017.

Now, James’ trial in New York will begin on February 27 next year.
