NPR: The Ministry of the Interior of the European Union stated in its annual report for 2021-22 that there was a need to update the National Register (NPR).
The report, which was published on Monday (November 7), underlined the need to update the NPR data across the country, except Assam. The ministry’s report said that due to the spread of Covid-19, the work of renovating NPR and other activities in the field have stopped.
The Ministry of Home Affairs added that people will be able to update the NPR data themselves. No documents or biometrics will be taken during the upgrade. The central government has put together a budget of Rs 3,941 crore.
The report said that the NPR was prepared under various provisions of the Citizenship Act, 2003 which was amended by the Citizenship Act, 1955.
Name, gender, date of birth, place of birth, place of residence, name of father and mother are updated and Aadhaar number, mobile number and ration card numbers are collected. The ministry said there is a need to reform the registry to include changes in birth, death and migration.
The NPR was prepared in 2010 and updated in 2015. Several parties opposed it and accused it of being a step towards the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
According to the report, from April 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021, a total of 1,414 people across the country were granted citizenship certificates under the Citizenship Act, 1955.
The ministry announced that the District Magistrates of 29 districts and Home Secretaries of nine states have been empowered by the government to grant them Indian citizenship after conducting an inquiry into people from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian and Parsi communities in Pakistan. Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
