Fire Burns Out on Conservation Land South of Pie Town, NM
The New Mexico Department of Land is preparing for a scheduled burn for November 10-17, 2022 on 400 acres of conservation land near the Magnas Divide about 16 miles southwest of Pie Town , NM in Catron County.
The method of burning is to reduce forest fuels, and to build on pre-existing cladding projects. Prescribed burning promotes ecosystem diversity by restoring ponderosa pine and piñon/juniper forests. This part of the project will reduce the risk of wildfires and subsequent wildfire erosion. Additionally, prescribed burning saves grasses and shrubs while reducing the recovery of competing juniper species. The program is being implemented in the Fall because the risk of fire is lower than at other times of the year. The Nature Conservancy, the Ember Alliance, and the Forest Stewards Guild are also partners in the project.
In light of the devastating wildfires throughout New Mexico this spring and summer, the State Department of Lands is taking the following steps to effectively implement prescribed fire: 1 ) weather conditions and fuel types are carefully evaluated as expected. and need in the burn plan 2) the burn owner’s tolerance for risk approach 3) daily burns are allowed, and 4) resources and personnel are available after the end of the fire so that there is no anger. of other flames.
The Surface Division of the State Department of Land assesses the conditions of the land before proceeding.
