A federal judge on Monday issued a temporary injunction to suspend parts of New York’s new gun restrictions while members of the advocacy group Gun Owners of America move forward with their legal challenges to the laws.
U.S. District Judge Glenn Suddaby agreed in a motion Monday to end enforcement of parts of the state’s new Concealed Carry Improvements Act, including provisions requiring people to to apply for a gun license to prove “good looks” and provide a list of them. social media accounts and their family contact information.
The new law limited guns to “sensitive” areas, making places like New York City’s Times Square a gun-free zone for licensed gun owners.
Suddaby said Monday that the requirements exceeded the authority of New York officials and said the state’s list of gun-free zones was too broad — though he approved restrictions on places like schools and polling stations, according to Reuters.
New York enacted the new law after a Supreme Court ruling in June struck down New York’s special gun safety law that required a license for concealed carry in public places.
