Last year I decided to drive from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Waterbury directly. It is 1,500 miles long and takes about 23 hours. I almost fell asleep twice on the trip in the wee hours of the night when I was traveling through Ohio and finally when I was 84 in Newtown and Southbury. Why didn’t I stop? I thought I’d be in trouble if I pulled over and got some winks in a parking lot on River Road or Rt.34.
I thought about the stupidity of that decision, and how foolish I thought it would be to never stop.
Is it legal to sleep in your car overnight here in Connecticut?
I found the answer for both of us.

There are no state or federal laws that prohibit you from sleeping in your car, as long as your vehicle is still there. Connecticut highway rest stops are designed for that, catching some zzz’s before you hit your destination. The length and time of day of your sleep is a factor. If you are staying anywhere for too long in a rest area or service area, a Connecticut State Trooper may check your welfare from time to time.
At the local level, each county has its own rules and regulations. It is fair to say that if you decide to sleep on private property, commercial property or parking lots, the local officer will conduct such a welfare check. Colorado and Oregon have started citizen-led safe parking programs, where businesses and private homeowners provide safe parking spaces for those experiencing homelessness. Is the Hasa program like this established here in Connecticut?
