ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) – Family and friends are pausing to remember a teacher killed in a south St. Louis city high school shooting.

“She was the most selfless person I’ve ever met, and I know many of you will agree. Mom was always there for us,” Jean Kuchka’s son Stephen said Monday during his mother’s funeral. “She was always there for anyone who needed her. That was the general course of Jean’s life. Let’s celebrate that life.”

Jean Kushka and Alexandria Bell were shot and killed at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School on October 24 when a former student approached them with a rifle.

“Mom believed that every child was a unique being and deserved an opportunity to learn,” Stephen Kushka Jr. said of his mother, who spent 20 years in public schools. “[The] Park didn’t leave the spark that led her there, but she was looking forward to retiring soon. She was willing to spend more time with the people she loved.

Jean Kuchka’s funeral was held Monday at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.
