SPRINGFIELD – One person in the hospital after an officer-involved shooting in Springfield.

Around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, crews were called to the 700 block of Selma Road on a report of a man threatening people with a gun at a Sunoco gas station.

According to a police report obtained through a public records request, when officers arrived on the scene, a suspect, described only as an adult white male, opened fire on the officers. Cruiser camera video showed officers arriving at the scene and the suspect holding a gun and firing at them.

Officers fired at the suspect. Surveillance cameras at the gas station captured the incident and showed the shooting, with the officer and suspect moving around the police cruiser. The video shows the suspect taking off as officers continue to shoot and eventually beat him.

The suspect was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center and then transported by medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital. His status remains unknown.

After the shooting, police spoke with a man who said the suspect had been giving him a ride before the shooting.

E. said he encountered the suspect at the Speedway on Limestone Street. He also told officers he asked for a ride to Fairfax on Main Street. After a short stop, the suspect was told to drop him off at Sunoco.

“[The man] When he arrived at the gas station, the suspect said he parked near the gas pumps. The suspect proceeded to load a cartridge into a handgun fashioned from his hooded shirt. The suspect started to say [the man] That he was a member of the Ku Klux Klan and had been sent to kill [him],” the incident report read.

Afterward, the man said he walked into the lobby of the gas station and was followed by the suspect.

The convenience store manager told NewsCenter 7’s John Bedell that he could tell there was some sort of argument between the two. He said he lied to get the gunman out of the lobby.

“He [had] A mask, all. He came into my shop and said, ‘Send this guy out.’ I said, ‘Okay, you go out. I am sending him out.’ When is he [goes] Outside, I locked the door. Then I call [the] The policemen “The police show up after 20 minutes and 15 minutes,” said Manoj Ram of Springfield.

After the man and Ramm locked the suspect out of the store and called the police, he said, he eventually heard gunshots coming from inside the store.

“It was like ‘pop, pop, boom, boom, boom.’ Four or five times,” Ram said, showing NewsCenter 7 two bullet holes in the pumps.

After the shooting, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) was called in to investigate the incident. A BCI spokesperson said on Monday that no further details about the investigation were available.

Springfield police confirmed Monday that the two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation by Springfield police.
