TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – In advance of Veterans Day, several East Texas organizations have come together to offer free legal advice to veterans. On Thursday, veterans will have access to a toll-free legal hotline.

This is a community service program where volunteer attorneys provide free advice on civil law matters to Smith County veterans. This program is a partnership between the Smith County Bar Foundation, Lone Star Legal Aid, and the Smith County Bar Association.

“One thing that private attorneys can volunteer for is helping the military. They just say, ‘yes, of course, I will,’” said attorney Dana Bias.

The program aims to help seniors get advice on legal matters regardless of income.

Bias said some of the calls are related to family law. Others can advise on wheels, drives, etc.

Mark Shaw is the community engagement manager at CampV and said programs like this benefit veterans. Whether it’s a crime or just life, he said counseling and financial aid are helpful.

“Just tell me you’re abroad and I’ll take the Red Cross messages. Bam, one of your parents has died, or your spouse has died, or someone in your family has died. Now they have a need,” Shaw said. “Worst-case scenario, that service member dies. It is important that you have the right documents according to the law, on the list, and the right representatives in one place, the burden of having to do all the work related to the law, can be reduced and taking that weight off the soldier’s shoulders.”

Bias said their job is to hire private attorneys to help them with their projects because there is a large population living in poverty in Texas, and private attorneys can help them.

“So anyone who has a problem, regardless of any income level can apply and hope to call an attorney, one of our volunteer attorneys in our Smith County volunteer attorney program for a brief consultation, ” Bias said.

The free legal advice line runs tomorrow from 10am to 3pm

To register, go to the Smith County Bar Foundation website.
