Chicago (WLS) — A Chicago man has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting death of an off-duty Merionette Park police officer on Chicago’s South Side while driving to work Saturday.
Chicago police said Monday that 24-year-old Darian Thompson was arrested at the scene 30 minutes after the shooting. Police said he was one of the suspects involved in the shooting.
“Officer Robinson,” 51, was on her way to work in the 2300-block of East 103rd Street around 5:30 p.m. when someone in a white Chevy sedan was trying to stop her when her vehicle stopped him from passing, police said.
That’s when he pointed a weapon at the driver’s side of the officer’s vehicle and fired several rounds, police said.
Then another car collided with another vehicle. A passenger got out and fired shots at the officer.
Chicago police said the officer returned fire, shooting the suspected shooter.

The officer was hit in the neck and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was treated for a superficial wound and released.
A good Samaritan helped the officer, who was shot in the legs, police said.
The 43-year-old viewer was also taken to the University of Chicago. Hope he is fine.
“I saw the ambulance stretcher [and] “Someone is lying on a stretcher going to an ambulance,” said a witness who did not want to be identified.
The witness, a woman who has lived in the neighborhood for 54 years, preferred not to show her face, but said she was shocked by what she saw outside her door.
“It was a lot of noise, a lot of ambulances, cars, police, stuff,” she said. “It’s really sad to hear what’s going on. Every day you hear about a lot of crime.”
It’s unclear what led to the shooting, but police said one person is now in custody.
