UVA admits it failed to take strong disciplinary action against the suspects before the shooting | Media Pyro

Charlottesville, Va. (WWBT) – After Sunday’s tragedy at the University of Virginia, the school is offering more insight into a suspect’s potential warning signs.

UVA Police Chief Timothy Longo said at a news conference Monday that Christopher Jones Jr. was investigated by the university’s threat assessment team in September for allegedly possessing a gun.

In a statement, university officials say they spoke with Jones’ roommate, who said he never saw Jones with a weapon. However, the university soon found Jones guilty of a concealed weapons violation in 2021.

Throughout the investigation, Jones repeatedly refused to cooperate with university officials, saying he had more information about his failure to disclose his past wrongdoings.

Accordingly, on October 27, Student Affairs decided to escalate his case for disciplinary action, but school officials admitted that the report was never submitted to the university judiciary committee. (UJC)

The school confirmed the 22-year-old was on his way to the capital with a bus full of UVA students after returning to the grounds when he opened fire on several students, killing three and injuring several others.

Jones was arrested Monday morning in Henrico after a 12-hour manhunt.

Jones was transported from the Henrico Jail to the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail Tuesday evening.

The 22-year-old will face two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony against the three UVA football players who were shot on that bus, according to case documents. The malicious wounding of additional victims on that bus, Marlee Morgan and Michael Hollins, and the use of two firearms.

In that case, Albemarle County General District Court Judge Matthew Quatrara ordered the disqualification, records show. The recall order was filed with the clerk, meaning a different judge will preside over all proceedings, including the first appearance in General District Court.

Jones was expected to appear for a video arraignment Tuesday morning, but an appearance was never scheduled because Albemarle General District Court never received the proper documents, but his arraignment is now scheduled for Wednesday at 9 a.m.
