A journalist in Assam’s Cachar district, a contributor to the Hindustan Times, said on Sunday that he had beaten up one of the security guards at a government hospital on Saturday night.

Cachar Inspector General of Police Numal Mahatta, who met Purkayastha at the hospital on Saturday, said: “We have instructions from the chief minister to provide adequate security to journalists. We are taking proper steps so that such incidents do not recur.”

Police said the accused housekeeper, S Deb, has been suspended and detained for questioning. “We are investigating the matter and appropriate action will be taken against him,” said an official, requesting anonymity.
