Guwahati, November 7 (IANS): The Assam government has issued a dress code for all its employees at the state secretariat building in Dispur, officials said on Monday.
According to the office order, the new dress code banned the wearing of jeans, T-shirts and leggings by the staff working in the Secretariat. Henceforth, they must wear formal clothes during working hours.
Men must wear formal shirts and trousers while female employees can wear sarees, salwar-kameez and mekhela-chador.
Every Wednesday, workers are instructed to wear traditional clothes.
During council sessions, staff will also be provided with uniforms. Even the arbitrators who discuss the proceedings of the Assembly must wear uniform as per government guidelines.
The order was passed on the directives of the Speaker of the Parliament Biswajit Daimari and will apply to daily wage workers as well as fixed wages.
The order said, “All employees must attend the office on all working days wearing casual clothes only (salwar suit/saree/mekhela chador, formal shirt and not casual clothes like t-shirts, jeans, leggings). etc.) Traditional dress of every community of Assam should be worn every Wednesday as per the wish of the worker.”
The order strongly states that action will be taken against any employee of the State Council who fails to comply with the directive.
