Assam: 18-year-old fell ill after eating ‘prasad’ at a religious function | Media Pyro

At least 18 people have been admitted to a hospital in Assam’s Majuli district after complaining of vomiting, abdominal pain, and other symptoms of suspected food poisoning. News agency ANI reported that people fell ill after eating ‘prasad’ during a religious ceremony at Maharichuk area near Garmur in Majuli district.

Dr Amulya Goswami, Superintendent of the district hospital told the agency that last night 12 people complained of stomach ache and on Saturday six more people were admitted to the hospital.

“Last night 12 people came here after complaining of stomach pain & vomiting, this morning six more people were admitted to the hospital, their condition is stable now, we suspected it was a case of food poisoning,” said Dr. Goswami.

However, Pulak Mahanta, the deputy commissioner informed the agency that the condition of all the patients is now stable.

“They were immediately admitted to the hospital and are now stable,” said Mahanta.

Meanwhile, Assam is dealing with Japanese encephalitis, a viral brain infection spread by mosquito bites. Yesterday, three more people died of encephalitis in Japan, according to the health bulletin of the regional government.

With this death, the death toll has increased by 60 since July 1, according to the state division of the National Health Service.

New deaths were reported in Tinsukia, Dima Hasao, and Darrang.

The state also reported six new cases, bringing the total to 345.

The new cases include two in Morigaon and one each in Bongaigaon, Darrang, Dima Hasao and Kamrup.

All districts, except South Salmara and Karbi Anglong, have been affected by the deadly disease.

Japanese encephalitis virus is found in pigs and birds and is transmitted by mosquitoes when they bite infected animals.
