SILCHAR: A 26-year-old man has been arrested in Cachar district of Assam after being accused of kidnapping, raping and trying to kill a 16-year-old girl. Police said the suspect was angry with the girl because she had gone to the Durga Puja Pandal with someone else.

Her family said the suspect tried to cut her throat, then tied her in a bag and threw the bag in a forest. But she survived the attack, freed herself and returned home with her clothes torn. She is now fighting for her life, a family member said.

The police said that the suspect, Sanjay Teli, was working in a tea plantation in Cachar district and was arrested by the officers of the Borkhola police station, based on the initial statement of the girl.

The girl’s family said she went for Durga Puja on October 3 and did not return home. The next day, they filed a police complaint. She returned home at 4pm and was rushed to the hospital with her family.

“The complainant claims that Sanjay Teli kidnapped the girl, took her to a forest and raped her. He tried to kill him by slitting his throat,” said a police officer.

Cachar Inspector General of Police Numal Mahatta said: “During the investigation, it was found that the girl had a relationship with the accused. She went to Durga Puja with another man, which angered him. “

The officer-in-charge of Borkhola police station, Manmohan Raut said that they recovered the weapon from Teli.

Shortly after being admitted to the hospital, the girl briefly wrote a letter to the police in her own words, because she could not speak because of her throat.

Police said a detailed report on the girl will be written once she recovers.

Her family has accused the accused of trying to harm other girls several times in the past. “Such people should not be roaming freely”.
