Alberta’s police watchdog has released new details about last week’s shootout with a police officer in Canyon Meadows, where a man died.

On Oct. 28 at 2:45 a.m. the officer responded to complaints of a vehicle parked near a condo complex in the 500 block of Canyon Meadows Drive SW.

On Monday, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said the officer activated his body-worn camera when he arrived at the scene, which showed him approaching the vehicle — which contained one person.

“The officer quickly backed away and a single gunshot rang out from the vehicle,” ASIRT said in a news release.

“The officer moved behind his police vehicle and discharged his firearm in the male’s direction. Further gunfire ensued between the officer and the vehicle. The male then exited the vehicle and left the area on foot.”

ASIRT says additional police units were called in and investigators in the HAWCS helicopter were able to locate the suspect nearby in Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Police tape in the parking lot of a condo building in Canyon Meadows following a police response that left one officer shot dead and a suspect taking his own life.“Around 3am, the male was seen discharging a firearm while the helicopter was monitoring him. There was no one near the male at this time,” ASIRT said.

Police on the ground later found the young man’s body lying under a gun at around 3:26 am.

ASIRT said the circumstances surrounding the use of force are still being investigated and anyone who witnessed and/or has video of these incidents is asked to contact investigators at 403-592-4306.
