The man who shot and wounded two Newark police officers at an apartment building on Tuesday put a gun in the face of one of the cops and began firing, details of the incident show, NJ Advance Media.
Officers Johnny Aquino and Jabrill Paul were dispatched to an apartment building on Van Welser Place around 1 p.m. Tuesday after a 911 caller identified a man from a news report, according to the documents. The caller told police the man was reading a book in the parking lot behind the building.
Paul and Aquino found the man, Kendall Howard, 30, in the back parking lot and repeatedly told him not to move, but he ignored their commands, then ordered him to get on the ground and not move, according to the documents. Officers’ body-worn cameras. He then began walking away and officers “became physically involved,” the documents state.
While trying to escape their restraints, Howard pulled a handgun from his right pants pocket and pointed the weapon at Aquino’s face, according to the report. Aquino was slashed in the neck and Paul was hit in the left leg as Howard fled, they said.
Paul and Aquino were later taken to the hospital by other officers who responded to the scene. Paul was released on Wednesday and Aquino on Friday.
When the police began searching for Howard, still photos of Howard were released to the media for attempted murder of two police officers and weapons related offenses in the hope that someone would help find Howard.
Howard’s mother eventually contacted investigators and told them it was her son after seeing pictures posted on a flyer and that he lived in an apartment in the building, according to the documents.
He was taken into custody shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday, officials said, from a building surrounded by law enforcement for hours a day earlier.
Authorities have released few new details and could not elaborate on Howard’s whereabouts during the search. It’s unclear where the accused shooter is hiding as several local, state and federal law enforcement officers armed with tactical weapons search for him. As of Friday evening, neither Newark authorities nor the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office had further comment. Documents obtained by NJ Advance Media shed no new light on the details surrounding Howard’s arrest.
Howard pleaded guilty to all charges during a virtual hearing Thursday, the prosecutor’s office said.
Asked by the judge if he understood the charges, Howard, who appeared inside the Essex County jail where he is being held, replied, “Yes.”
Howard is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, for a detention hearing before Essex County Superior Court Judge Michael Rav.
