A civilian security guard who was seriously injured in a shootout at a checkpoint near Jerusalem last month improved his condition and was transferred to a rehabilitation center on Tuesday.
Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center said last week that David Morel, 30, who was shot in the head during an Oct. 8 attack near the Shufat refugee camp, had regained consciousness for the first time.
On Tuesday, Morrell was transferred to the Lowenstein Hospital Rehabilitation Center in Ra’anana.
“We are pleased to transfer David to rehab this morning and wish him a successful journey,” said Dr. Guy Rosenthal said.
Morell arrived at the hospital with severe head injuries and underwent complex neurosurgery before being transferred to the hospital’s intensive care unit to stabilize his condition, Rosenthal said.
“With his release to rehab, he still has a long way to go and we hope and expect that his condition will continue to improve,” Rosenthal said.

After immigrating from Brazil in 2017, Morel joined the IDF as a lone soldier, then became a security guard after his release from the army, according to his family.
In the attack on the checkpoint, an Israeli soldier, Sgt. Nova Lazar (18) was killed.
The gunman, Uday Tamimi, 22, fled the scene and was killed 11 days later while attempting to launch another attack at a checkpoint near the entrance to the West Bank settlement city of Male Adumim. A security officer sustained minor injuries.
On Monday, prosecutors indicted two men in East Jerusalem for supplying Tamimi with the gun used in the attack.
According to the charge sheet, Tamimi bought the gun and two magazines from an acquaintance, Nadir Abu Rajib (29). In a deadly attack.
Abu Rajib and Alahaliyyah were charged with various weapons offences. Prosecutors have requested that they be kept in custody until the legal proceedings are concluded.

Tensions have risen in the West Bank recently as the IDF pressed with counter-terrorist offensives focused on the northern West Bank.
The operation has netted more than 2,000 arrests in nighttime raids, but killed more than 125 Palestinians, many – but not all – of them during the attacks or during clashes with security forces.
The IDF’s counter-terror offensive in the West Bank was launched following a series of Palestinian attacks in the spring of this year that left 19 dead.
An Israeli man was killed in an attack in Hebron last month, a woman was killed in a suspected attack in Holon in September, and four soldiers were killed in attacks and arrests in the West Bank. A man who was wounded in a stabbing attack in a Palestinian village in October died on Tuesday.
