A Denaire man was fatally shot in what law enforcement is investigating as a murder-suicide.

Benjamin McGuire, 20, of Denaire was killed.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department identified him as Damon Banks, 51, of Merced.

The murder-suicide was discovered around 6 a.m. Nov. 5 at a home in the 2600 block of Redwood Road in Ceres, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Veronica Esquives.

The first call to the sheriff’s department said a family member had been shot. While deputies were on their way to the scene, another call came in that a second person in the home had been shot.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Esquives said evidence showed Banks turned the gun on himself after he got home and shot McGuire.

“The purpose of the banks’ actions is still unclear,” Esquives said.

The Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Summerton at (209) 525-7032.
