Nov 5 (Reuters): Nine people were shot in Philadelphia on Saturday night, two in critical condition, police said.

Multiple shooters got out of a vehicle and opened fire in the Pennsylvania city’s Kensington area, firing about 40 shots, Philadelphia First Deputy Police Commissioner John Stanford said in a televised news conference.

He said that the injured are in hospital and the condition of seven people is stable.

The motive for the shooters, who returned to the vehicle, remains unknown and police are investigating, Stanford said.

The bloodshed follows a series of US school shootings that have killed and injured dozens this year alone, sparking a long-running debate in the US over gun control. One of the deadliest was in Uvalde, Texas, where a gunman killed 19 children and two adults in May.

One person was killed and 20 others were injured in shootings in Kansas City and Chicago on Halloween night.
