A shooting last weekend in East Reading left one man dead and another man being held without bail in the Berks County Jail after being charged with murder.
Reading police said Wednesday that Jefferson Etienne, 38, died in surgery at a Reading hospital after a shooting early Saturday in front of his home in the 400 block of South 16th Street.
Police charged two 24-year-old readers, one of whom was shot while fleeing, with first- and third-degree murder and conspiracy.
One of the suspects, Mark D. Lockman Jr. was found 10 minutes later at his home suffering from a gunshot wound to the right arm, investigators said.
Tuesday night in Reading Central Court, District Judge Eric J. After appearing before Taylor, Lockman was remanded in prison pending a hearing.
Lokman and co-accused Jabar M. rested on Wednesday afternoon. Hill, too, was charged Saturday after investigators reviewed security camera footage and interviewed witnesses.
According to court documents:
Police were dispatched at 5:22 a.m. to a report of a shooting in the 400 block of South 16th Street. They found Etienne suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
After Etienne was taken by ambulance to Reading Hospital, officers searched the crime scene for ballistics evidence and found 12 9mm cartridge casings, two .40 caliber casings, and a gun magazine.
Footage from nearby homes and businesses showed a light-colored sedan roll right in front of the victim’s home and park the vehicle near the intersection with Muhlenberg Street just before 5:20 p.m.
Three men were seen walking away from the car. One man, later identified as Hill, had his hand on his front hip while Lockman held a gun in his right hand.
A third man, who has yet to be identified, stood on the street several houses away.
The footage showed Hill and Lockman pulling up in front of the victims’ homes. Moments later, Etienne, Hill, and Lockman saw the flashes on the nose from where they were standing.
Two flashes were seen coming from the hill.
After the shooting, Hill and Lockman drove to 16th and Muhlenberg streets. Hill was seen getting into the driver’s side of the car he had gotten out of minutes earlier. Lockman was last seen running north on Sixteenth Street toward Perkiomen Avenue.
A witness told detectives she was at home when Hill and Lockman arrived and began accusing Etienne of stealing the gun. Etienne had a gun of his own, and after Hill and Lockman approached, the witness heard gunshots.
After Etienne collapsed on the sidewalk, the witness came out of the house, grabbed Etienne’s gun and fired at the two assailants, wounding one of them.
About 10 minutes after the shooting, police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Good Street for a report of a man who had been shot in the right arm. Officers responded and located Lockman, a resident of the home.
Hours after the shooting, Lockman admitted to criminal investigators that he and Hill went there to retrieve Lockman’s gun and were shot.
Police found footage showing Hill, Lockman and an unidentified third suspect arriving at the Good Street home after the shooting.
Hill is furious and observes that he laments dropping his gun magazine, then “Too much happened bro”.
The unidentified male responded, “Relax bro, we’ve already done too much. It’s already over. “
