One person is dead after a shooting just down the street from a North York elementary school.

Police were initially dispatched to the Jane Street and Firgrove Crescent area south of Finch Avenue for a shooting call around 1:40 p.m.

Police initially said officers were administering first aid to the victim.

However, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firgrove Public School and Westview Centennial Secondary School were initially subject to lockdowns, according to the Toronto District School Board. But the board confirmed at 3:50 that both the lockdowns have been lifted.

Police tape could be seen Thursday in the parking lot of an apartment building next to Firgrove Public School.

Supri spoke to reporters at the scene. Andy Singh said the shooting appears to be a “targeted” incident and there are no further concerns for public safety at this time.

But he acknowledged that a shooting in broad daylight near an elementary school is “very concerning” and vowed to increase police presence in the neighborhood.

“Not only will the neighborhood officers from 31 Division be here today, but we will ensure that there is special attention in the area, we will monitor any activity and be in very close contact with the schools. ,” he said.

Police have not yet released any information about the suspects.

Singh said the victim is believed to be in his 20s.

“We are still in the process of confirming the identification,” he said.
