Two people were killed in a murder-suicide shooting Tuesday inside the building that houses the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, authorities said.

Dallas police, sheriff’s deputies and county marshals were called to reports of shots fired inside the Dallas County Medical Examiner building, located in the 2300 block of North Stemmons Freeway, at 4:45 p.m., said Will Fritz of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

A man and a woman were found dead inside the building, Fritz said. One of them is believed to be an employee who worked at the building, but their relationship was not immediately clear.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins told reporters outside the building that there was no longer a threat to the public. Law enforcement searched the medical examiner’s building, which is protocol under active shooter incidents, and the neighboring Dallas County Health and Human Services building.

Both buildings were evacuated. Texas Sky Ranger video showed people running from the front of the building to the parking lot outside.

“It’s heartbreaking. I’m sorry this happened. Grief counseling will be set up for anyone who needs it,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins said the names of the dead will be released after their families are notified.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

No further information was immediately available.
