The takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk has attracted a lot of attention in India and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is hoping that Elon Musk will take a look at what Rahul Gandhi is doing. Controversial comedian Munawar Faruqui joined the list when he spoke about Elon Musk’s claim that comedy is illegal on Twitter. “Pakka? Nahi bhai rehne do tum nahi aaoge bail karane… (Really? No leave it, you will not come for my bail)” Munawar tweeted in reply. Munawar was arrested on January 1, 2021 and spent a month in jail. His shows continue to face criticism and threats from Hindu religious groups who accuse the comedian of hurting Hindu sentiments. Author Taslima Nasreen also commented on Elon Musk’s comical tweet when she said that one of her previous tweets had been deleted by the former Twitter boss.
Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma, author Chetan Bhagat was one of the first to congratulate Elon Musk when he took over the social media company after killing four CEOs, including Indian-born CEO Parag Agrawal.
In his first tweet after the takedown, Musk wrote ‘the bird has been released’ indicating ‘good times’ for his next tweet. Then he announced that Twitter is under him and going for a content update council, and no major policy decisions or accountability will happen before that council meets. He added that comedy is now legal on Twitter.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hailed Elon Musk and hoped that under the new leadership Twitter would be more proactive in countering hate speech and fact-checking. Sharing a photo of what his account looked like had been tampered with, he expressed hope that the new leadership would not ‘silence the voice of the opposition in India due to government pressure’.
