SILCHAR: Tension prevailed in Barmaan Basti area under Ratabari district of Karimganj district in south Assam, after the death of an 18-year-old girl who was killed by a number of pigs recently.
Padani Rani Barman, daughter of Bama Charan Barman, was brutally killed by a number of pigs on November 5 (Saturday) after she went to work in the Jhum area of Barman Basti, about 132 KM. in Silchar with her friends. While they were working in the fields, wild pigs attacked them. Padani’s friends managed to escape, but were attacked and killed by the pigs. The body was later sent by the police to Karimganj Civil Hospital for post-mortem.
Talking to EastMojoResidents of Barmaan Basti said that this has caused panic among the residents, especially those who have gone to remote areas and forest areas for their daily life.
“This incident shook the local people. People are afraid to stay away from residential areas. The concerned authorities should take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the people,” said a local.
Another resident said that the locality (Barmaan Basti) is one of the remotest areas of Ratabari/Karimganj district and therefore they do not get any proper attention from the administration/management.
Residents have requested the forest department to capture the wild boar and send it to a protected area. “Many lives will be lost if the vicious animals remain in the area and therefore it is necessary to catch them,” the residents said. They sought the intervention of forest minister Parisal Suklabaidya.
Padani’s family members said that she was the only income earner in the family and her death left them financially destitute. They earnestly appealed to the government for compensation and demanded the Karimganj district administration to intervene.
Ratabari BJP MLA Bijoy Malakar said that he will talk to the authorities concerned for a reasonable solution to the issue.
Forest Minister, Parimal Suklabaidya said EastMojo that the necessary steps to solve the problem will be taken soon.
