BUCYRUS – Bucyrus Police Capt. Tom Walker provided the following update on Friday afternoon’s officer-involved shooting:
On Friday at 4:35 p.m., officers with the Bucyrus Police Department were involved in a shootout with an armed suspect. No residents, officers or suspects were injured. The accused is in custody.
The Bucyrus Police Department reported a random shooting in Morrow County at 4:16 p.m. At 4:28 p.m., deputies responding to the scene provided a vehicle description.
The suspect vehicle reportedly fled northbound in the Morrow County area and at least one person was injured in the incident.
It was initially reported that there were two (2) suspects in the vehicle. Both are armed and dangerous.
While scouring the city for a suspicious vehicle, a Bucyrus officer E. A silver Honda SUV was seen in the 100 block of Charles St.
He saw recent bullet damage to the rear of the vehicle and saw the driver wearing a silver helmet with a rifle on his lap.
W. Charles St. Officers attempted to conduct a felony stop in the 200 block. Before officers could get into position, the suspect (Jacob D. Davidson, 38, Centerburg, Ohio) opened fire on the officers.
One officer was able to get out of his cruiser and open fire. A single round appeared to hit the suspect in his helmet, causing him to take cover in the front seat and quickly surrender to officers.

While driving around the city in search of the suspicious vehicle, E. A Bucyrus officer who spotted a silver Honda SUV in the 100 block of Charles St. saw recent bullet damage to the rear of the vehicle and the driver appeared to be dressed. A silver helmet with a rifle on its lap.
W. Charles St. Officers attempted to conduct a felony stop in the 200 block. Before officers could get into position, the suspect (Jacob D. Davidson, 38, Centerburg, Ohio) opened fire on the officers.
One officer was able to get out of his cruiser and open fire. A single round appeared to hit the suspect in his helmet, causing him to take cover in the front seat and quickly surrender to officers. Mr. Davidson was taken into custody and transported to the Crawford County Justice Center.
A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded two rifles, magazines and ammunition. Mr. Officers found Davidson’s silver helmet with a single bullet hole in it. The Honda’s driver-side headrest was fitted with a thick piece of wood, providing some degree of protection for the suspect.
“This investigation is just beginning,” said Capt. Tom Walker, public information officer for the Bucyrus Police Department. “At this time, we know very little about our suspect, other than he claims to be a Marine veteran.”
“While Mr. Davidson is a suspect in the shooting of someone in the Morrow County incident, we cannot confirm this until the evidence is evaluated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI),” Captain Walker said. He added that there were no other suspects in the vehicle when the incident took place in Bucyrus.
The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and Bucyrus EMS assisted BPD at the scene. The investigation into the firing is being handled by the BCI.
Although the firing took place in a densely populated area, no residents were injured or houses damaged. W. of Charles and s. Spring and the intersection was closed for several hours after the incident, and BPD thanks the community for their patience during the investigation process.
“Make no mistake, this was a horrific incident,” Captain Walker said. “Our community came very close to losing two police officers today,” he added. “By the grace of God, better tactics, better practice and better judgment prevailed.”
Captain Walker described the officers’ actions as “nothing short of heroic”. “Thanks to the brave officer who stood in the gap for our community, the citizens are safe and the suspect is in jail,” he added.
Chief Asenheimer said, “I am proud of all the employees of Bucyrus PD. Officers and dispatchers handled this difficult incident professionally.
Officers canvassed the immediate area to speak with potential witnesses. As part of the ongoing investigation, if anyone was in the area and saw anything, please contact Bucyrus Detectives at (419) 562-1006.
BPD will release more information as it becomes available. The department would like to thank CCSO, Bucyrus EMS, BCI, and all agencies involved in this investigation. They are thankful for the community’s overwhelming support and continued prayers.
