The Tucson campus is open today. Instructors may rearrange or rework classes in certain portions to include time to reflect on the loss of our beloved colleague, Tom Meixner.

Support and counseling services are available to anyone who needs them. Please watch for communications from your instructors.

Law enforcement has arrested a suspect in today’s shooting on the main campus of the University of Arizona.

Murad Derwish was apprehended by Arizona Department of Public Safety officers following a traffic stop near Gila Bend, Arizona at 5:10 p.m.

The University of Arizona’s main campus in Tucson was hit by gunfire today. At approximately 2 p.m., a man called John W. Harshbarger entered the building and one victim was shot and killed.

The university has canceled all in-person classes on the Tucson campus for the remainder of the day, and is asking all non-essential faculty, staff and students to leave the Tucson campus or go to their dorms.

The University of Arizona Police Department and the Tucson Police Department are continuing to search for the suspect.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5 feet 8 inches tall, about 35 years old, with light brown hair, wearing a blue baseball cap and a dark backpack.
