Philadelphia (WPVI) — Sources tell ActionNews that the teenager who was injured in a fatal shooting on the SEPTA subway Monday afternoon fired the shots that killed a 21-year-old man.
Philadelphia police were searching for a gunman who shot a man multiple times on a Broad Street Line train in the Francisville section of the city around 2:40 p.m.
The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he died a short time later.
A 16-year-old man was shot in the arm in the incident, police said. It was initially reported that he was innocent, however, sources tell Action News that is not the case.
According to sources, the teenager boarded the subway at the Susquehanna Avenue stop and tried to rob the 21-year-old man.
Sources say an altercation ensued and the teenager shot the victim multiple times. Philadelphia police described the shooting as a “targeted attack.”
14 fire cartridge casings were recovered from the spot. Earlier reports said the victim was shot 11 times, but sources say it could be closer to six.
The victim, who had a permit to carry, was also armed and shot the teenager in the arm.
The 16-year-old later showed up at the hospital, but told police he had been shot on the basketball court. He denied being shot at the subway at Broad Street and Fairmount Avenue.
Everything changed when the mother arrived at the hospital, sources say.
The mother knew her son was lying and eventually admitted to shooting him.
Sources say he told the police where he hid the gun.
Action News says the 16-year-old has two previous arrests for theft.
At least a dozen passengers were in the train car, but no other injuries were reported.
