The Assam Cabinet led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has cleared the way for military-like training for the state police.

The Cabinet on Wednesday, approved the appointment of 34 retired constables as Additional Superintendents of Police on contract basis in all Assam police brigades to “strengthen the training programme”.

These 34 retired Army officers should come under Special Deputy Inspector General (Training) to fulfill the core objectives, Assam Information Minister and government spokesperson Pijush Hazarika said.

The minister said that they also approved equal pay and promotions for government civil servants and regional police officers to ensure rapid promotion and greater coordination and integration across services.

Other decisions included the implementation of smart meters in the Assam Electricity Distribution Corporation under the Distribution Restructuring Scheme. The plan consists of installing 58 lakh smart meters in three years at a cost of ₹ 4,536.79 crore.

“To eliminate doubts about smart meters, these will be installed with traditional meters for at least 30 days to analyze the difference between the readings of the two systems,” said Mr. Hazarika.
