Provincial police have released a man arrested in connection with a shooting in the parking lot of a hotel complex in Esterel, Que. Friday in Laurentians, about 100 kilometers north of Montreal.
The police did not file a case against him after evaluating the incident. The 53-year-old man was released on a promise to appear in court.
Valery Tarasenko was wounded in the shooting, Esterel Mayor Frank Pappas and police sources told Radio-Canada. Police say he is being treated at the hospital for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Tarasenko is a Russian-speaking Ukrainian-born entrepreneur who owns assets in several companies, particularly in Quebec and Florida, Radio-Canada reports.
He is known to be linked to Russian-speaking Ukrainian Inna Yashchysh, who recently made headlines for infiltrating the Mar-a-Lago estate and entourage of former US President Donald Trump, posing as a member of the Rothschild banking dynasty.
Immediately after the shooting, Radio-Canada learned around 1 p.m. that three people had been killed, one of them with a serious head injury. But the Sûreté du Québec later released a statement saying only one person suffered what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
The shooting happened at the Esteral resort near Fridolin-Simard Road in Lac Dupuis.
Radio-Canada reported that three men opened fire on three other people in the parking lot and that the shooters fled in a black SUV.
