Barpeta, Nov 10: In a shocking incident, a fraud worth crores of rupees has taken place in several colleges of Barpeta and Bongaigaon districts in the name of Ishan Uday Scholarship given by the Ministry of Minority Development to meritorious students from facing the minority communities.

A nefarious gang has fraudulently stolen huge amount of rupees from the clothes of students of several colleges in Barpeta and Bongaigaon districts.

A few days ago, the Barpeta police managed to arrest five people, including the principal of the college, after two people were arrested for the crime.

The superintendent of police (SP) of Barpeta district, Amitabh Sinha, said that the principals and staff of some colleges are also involved in the scam.

On November 2, the police arrested two persons named Jeherul Islam and Habibur Rahman from Jaherpam village under Barpeta Sadar police station, who allegedly deposited money in the name of Ishan Uday scholarship.

The police also managed to recover laptops, computers, printers and some documents from the two men.

According to the news, apart from the students, the police also arrested the principal of Barpeta college, Manik Ali, along with the junior assistant of the college Abul Bashaar and the junior assistants of the prestigious college of Baniyarapara, Sajidul Islam, Khabiruddin and Jahorpam Gaur. Salim Malik.

According to SP, this vicious circle got an opportunity to carry out fraud in the name of Ishan Uday for scholarships for minority students because of the ability to get OTP from some college authorities.

He said that an investigation is being conducted into the act, and they have also sought information from the Bank.

It may be recalled that since 2018, the vicious circle has fraudulently drawn the amount of rupees for the scholarship of Ishan Uday in the name of Barpeta-Bongaigaon College of Barpeta district, the famous college of Baniyarapara of Barpeta district, Koyakusi College, Harendra-Chitra College and CK College Abhayapuri.

Students who pass the High School Examination with 75 percent marks are awarded a scholarship of around Rs 60,000 per year. Besides, the Ministry of Minority Development of the Central Government also provides scholarships to the privileged students from the minority communities of the State to study in some of the leading educational institutions of the State outside this scheme. scholarship.
