Reigning Paralympic champion Avani Lekha finished sixth in the R2 – Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event at the Para Shooting World Championships in Al Ain, UAE on Thursday.

The SH1 category is for athletes with lower limb disabilities for competition in rifle events.

Avani is the third shooter to be eliminated from the finals with a score of 163.8. The 21-year-old Indian made it to the top eight after finishing fifth in the qualifying round with a score of 620.9. However, in the final, she was behind from the start. After the first series of five shots, Avni was in last place and recovered in the next five shots to finish joint fifth. In the end, she couldn’t find enough high 10s to get close to the leaders.

Slovakia’s Veronika Vadovikova (248.5) won gold, Ukraine’s Iryna Shchetnik (247.9) silver and Korea’s Lee Yunri (227.2) bronze.

In June this year, Avni won gold in the same event with a world record of 250.6 at the Chatroux Para Shooting World Cup. Last year in August, he won gold in the Tokyo Paralympics. She won bronze in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions SH1 event, becoming the first Indian woman to win multiple medals at the Paralympics.
