The suspect in the shooting death of a Toronto police officer who was taking a lunch break during training in Mississauga was later taken into custody after a second fatal shooting in Hamilton, authorities said at a press conference Monday night.
Authorities say one person was injured in Mississauga. The suspect fled into Milton and is believed to have shot three more people, killing one, police said.
Constable Andrew Hong, 48, of Toronto police’s traffic unit, was shot at close range and died at the scene, Chief James Ramer told reporters.
“This is devastating news for his family, all members of the Toronto Police Service and our entire police community,” the chief said. “We will lean on each other as we work to support Constable Hong’s family and each other in our grief.”
Hong is survived by his wife and two children. He has been with the department for 22 years.
Peel Regional Police in Mississauga said they were called to the scene of a shooting at the intersection of Argentina Road and Winston Churchill Boulevard, where two people were shot just after 2 p.m.
Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duryappa said the victim was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries and is in a trauma centre. He described the firing on the constable as an ambush.
Halton Regional Police said three people were shot on Bronte Street South in neighboring Milton after the suspect fled. Police said one person died on the spot and two others were taken to hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.
“We believe it is the same suspect involved in the shooting in Mississauga,” Duryappa said.
The suspect, who Peel police said was wearing a yellow construction vest and black, was taken into custody. Halton Regional Police say.
Both police agencies said they were investigating the connection between the two incidents and believed they involved the same person.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted about the shooting in Ontario on Monday.
“My thoughts and those of many others are with everyone who knew the police officer who was killed in the line of duty today in Mississauga,” Trudeau said. Tweeted. “We are also thinking of those injured in today’s shooting – we wish you a full recovery.”
Milton, Mississauga and Hamilton are not west of Toronto.
