New York Attorney General Letitia James, one of former President Donald Trump’s top legal allies, is hoping to win a second term on Sunday in a race where she faces a Little-known Republican lawyer.

James, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Michael Henry, a commercial litigation attorney who has been endorsed by several police unions but has long been at odds with one of the state’s most powerful Democrats.

James, 64, made history when she took office in January 2019. She was the first Black woman elected to statewide office, the first black state attorney general and the first woman was elected to the post.

He began investigating Trump when he took office and sued the Republican in September, alleging he and his company misled banks and others about the value of his assets. .

James also ran afoul of one of his party’s stars, overseeing the impeachment inquiry last year that led to the resignation of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Other adversaries include the National Rifle Association – which it is suing for alleged executive action; manufacturers and distributors of opioid painkillers; the Roman Catholic Church, whose office is under investigation for its handling of priest abuse; and the NYPD, which he criticized for its treatment of protesters after the Minneapolis police killed George Floyd.

Like many New York Republicans this year, Henry has campaigned on fear of rising crime and lack of support for law enforcement. He favors loosening gun restrictions and fewer business regulations.

Henry said that “James’ office has been seized with political expediency.” He has been criticized for following Trump and involving himself in the Cuomo investigation as he plans to replace him as governor.

James briefly ran for governor last year after Cuomo resigned, but left the job after about two months.

During Trump’s presidency, James repeatedly challenged his administration, challenging policy on the environment, immigration, education, health care and other issues. He also fought Trump over his plans to include a question about immigration status on the Census, winning at the US Supreme Court.

Trump has repeatedly criticized James’ actions against him, calling them “racist” and politically motivated.

Before he won office in 2018, James called Trump a “con man,” a “carnival barker” and a “judge of fear.”

After the Supreme Court issued its decision overturning Roe v. Wade, James vowed to use his office to protect abortion rights in the state.

James, who grew up and still lives in Brooklyn, was also very open, saying she had an abortion about two decades ago.
