Update: A 37-year-old man is in critical but stable condition following an officer-involved shooting in Salt Lake City.
According to a Salt Lake City Police Department press release, Huntsman Mental Health Institute’s Mobile Crisis Outreach Team responded to the request at 1700 S. The investigation began at 11:32 a.m. when officers responded to a home near 900 East.
“Social workers and family members contacted the 37-year-old man inside the detached garage while MCOT requested the assistance of SLCPD,” the statement said.
When officers arrived, they met MCOT social workers and family members and were escorted to the garage. They waited inside while social workers and family members spoke with the man, according to the release.
During the incident, the suspect reached for a weapon and both officers opened fire, police said.

Following the shooting, the man was taken into custody and treated by officers, including the Salt Lake City Fire Department.
The man was then taken to a hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.
Police said there were no other injuries.
“Today, our officers took action to protect two social workers and a family member in a split-second incident,” SLCPD Chief Mike Brown said. “The social workers asked our officers to respond to this call for their protection and assistance. These are situations that can never be predicted, but our two officers involved relied on their training and experience to protect others and themselves.
Both officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave, police said.
OICI Protocol Team Four is leading the investigation into the incident, while the SLCPD Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a separate investigation.

Salt Lake City – Authorities are asking the public to avoid the areas of 900 East and 1700 South in Salt Lake City due to the heavy police presence.
The Salt Lake City Police Department said there is no threat to the public and is investigating this as a “critical officer-involved incident.”
One person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and no officers were injured in the incident, according to police.
Police closed 900 East between 1700 South and Wilson Avenue.
A few blocks east, an officer suffered minor injuries after being involved in a traffic accident while responding to the scene.

Police told KSL TV that the officer was driving an unmarked car and that the crash is under investigation. Another officer took the injured officer to a nearby hospital.
Another agency will investigate the crash portion of the incident.
