Meta-owned WhatsApp has added a new feature to the messaging app’s privacy settings. WhatsApp users can now block others from seeing their online status, which was previously impossible.
Until now, WhatsApp users could block others from viewing “last visited” information. While this prevented anyone from knowing when the user was last online on the site, it did not prevent others from accessing the online status.
Users who set their last visit to None will notice that the online status option is set to Everyone, meaning anyone can check this value.
The online status shows whether the user is currently online. This feature was introduced in the beta version of the client in September 2022, but now it is also available in the latest stable version of WhatsApp.
Here’s how to set last visit/online status privacy in WhatsApp:
- Make sure you are using the latest version of WhatsApp. On Android, you may need to check for app updates on Google Play to see if an update is available.
- Open the WhatsApp client and select Menu > Settings.
- Go to Privacy > Dating & Online Latitude.
You have the following options:
- Set the last visit status to “all”, “my contacts”, “my contacts except” or “nobody”.
- Set online status to “all” or “same as last visit”.
You can change your online status to the same as your last visit, as this will prevent others from seeing when you are online. There are services on the Internet that allow anyone to check the online status of any phone number. If you want to prevent this from happening, you need to set the online status option to the same as last time and choose any value for this option except all.
Note: if you limit the visibility of any of the parameters, you also limit your visibility in that regard. If you change these two settings to your contacts, you’ll still be able to see the last visit and online status of your contacts, but you won’t be able to do this for anyone outside your contact list.
WhatsApp should consider changing the default option from all to another option to improve privacy for all users. For now, you have to make changes manually.
