Guwahati (Assam): Officials of the State Railway Police (GRP) on Tuesday seized 600 grams of gold, worth Rs 40 lakh, from a person at the Rajdhani Express station in Guwahati railway station.
The GRP personnel also arrested the person from Kerala who was carrying the gold.
Prasenjit Das, the officer in charge of GRP Guwahati said that the market value of the seized gold was estimated at over Rs 40 lakh.
“According to the intelligence, today morning we conducted a search operation on the Rajdhani Express, we found gold powder in three packets weighing 600 grams in the possession of a passenger of the train, it came from Dimapur, the price the market of the captured people. The jewelery is estimated to be worth more than Rs 40 lakh,” Prasenjit Das, officer-in-charge of GRP Guwahati said.
A case has been registered in GRP Guwahati in this regard.

Earlier in March, this year, in a similar operation against gold smuggling, the Government Railway Police (GRP) seized more than 32 kg of gold worth more than Rs 16 crore on the Mumbai-Bhubaneswar Konark Express in Odisha.
According to a statement issued by the Odisha State CT and GST Enforcement Wing, four persons have been arrested for questioning after failing to produce valid GST documents. The prisoners, identified as Hasmukhlal Jain, Surseh Sahadev Khare, Mahesh Bhomsar and Deepak Patel, all from Mumbai, were carrying four bags each containing 8 kg of gold, according to the police.
“They planned to sell gold jewelery to traders in and around Bhubaneswar. We stopped them due to their suspicious activities,” said Inspector Jayadev Biswajit In Charge, GRP Bhubaneswar.
“They have evaded the tax, so far they have not disclosed who are the buyers,” he said.
One of the GST officials named Manmath Pradhan said that 32 kg of gold worth more than Rs 16 crores was handed over to the GRP police.
“We will collect 3 per cent GST and 3 per cent penalty on gold jewellery. We are also differentiating the identity of these byres of Bhubaneswar. After that the income tax department will also verify the money invested to buy illegal gold jewellery. ,” he added. ANI
