About a week after he was shot by a law enforcement officer in Ethiopia, Fawzia Musi’s leg was amputated.

Moosey was shot in the stomach and hip and suffered a broken leg. She underwent multiple surgeries over the past few days in hospitals in Ethiopia to treat her injuries.

After the shooting that left her younger sister dead and her 14-year-old son wounded, Moosey, executive director of Maine Community Integration in Lewiston, was taken to different hospitals twice for medical treatment.

Doctors at a second hospital in the capital recommended amputation. After being transferred to a third hospital in Ethiopia, doctors were optimistic about saving her leg, according to a GoFundMe update from her daughter, Shadia Abdullah.

“Their evaluation revealed vascular damage and infection from the gunshots, and she required vascular surgery and a blood transfusion,” Abdullahi wrote. “We believed everything was fine until this (Monday) morning when I got a phone call from my uncle.”

In a Facebook post by Maine Community Integration, Moosey’s leg was amputated above the knee with her consent after the infection spread faster than expected.

Moosey’s family and colleagues at Maine Community Integration are continuing to ask the community for donations to help with her medical care.

“My family and I fear infection after the surgery, and we believe she will need to be flown back in an emergency air ambulance following the surgery,” Abdullahi wrote.

They hope to be able to take Moose to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland soon after surgery. The air ambulance will cost $178,000, Abdullahi said.

As of Monday morning, her GoFundMe had received more than $82,000 in donations from more than 700 donors. The fundraising goal has been raised to $200,000.

A Facebook post from Maine Community Integration says the organization is looking for a personal or private loan for Abdullahi, who is coordinating her mother’s transportation to the US.

Abdullahi wrote that he hopes to post an additional update on the mother’s condition later Monday.

This story will be updated.
