Silchar: In view of the rapid rise in the number of dengue cases in the neighboring district of Karbi Anglong, the state health department has sounded an ‘alert’ in Dima Hasao district and issued several measures to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.
At least 369 dengue cases have been reported in Assam since the beginning of October. Among them, at least 344 cases have been reported in Karbi Anglong district. Four people have died in the district so far.
Meanwhile, schools and colleges in the district have been ordered to remain closed till November 12, considering the increasing cases of the disease.
Aware of the situation, Leena Hakmaosa, the joint director of health services, Dima Hasao, held a meeting at her office in Haflong on Monday.
The meeting was also attended by Rebecca Changsan, health secretary, North Cachar Hills Autonomous Region; senior doctors; Medical officers of the Haflong Civil Hospital and officials of other departments. Besides, two experts from the health department, Dipankar Chetia and Abit Baruah were also present at the meeting.
During the meeting, the authorities decided to take strict measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
Leena Hakmaosa said that two cases of dengue have been found in Haflong – one in CCF Colony (Sarkari Bagan) and another in PWD Colony – and the patients are being treated.

The health secretary of NCHAC, Rebecca Changsan emphasized the need for the community to effectively participate in the control of this disease, and urged the authorities of various departments to take the necessary steps to educate the community about the disease.
She added that measures such as fogging and public announcements are being taken and they hope that the situation will be normal soon.
Echoing similar views, health expert Dipankar Chetia emphasized the importance of creating public awareness of the disease.
